Two villages evacuated in Kythera

Two villages were evacuated in Kythera for precautionary reasons after strong winds rekindled the blaze that has been burning in the area of Pitsinades in Mylopotamos since Friday, the Civil Protection Service said on Saturday.
The villages, Arei and Mylopotamos, are located in the central-western Kythera. The decision to evacuate is taken by the mayor and not the fire department, a source from the fire department told the Athens-Macedonian News Agency. Sixty-one firemen with 23 vehicles, 57 men on foot and several aerial means are operating in the area.
The Civil Protection Service also said it had not received an official request by the mayor to declare the area in a state of emergency.
