The Aikaterini Laskaridis Foundation proudly announces the resumption of the archaeological research at the famous Antikythera Shipwreck. The ancient merchant ship that sank around the middle of the 1st century BC, carrying a unique cargo among which is the Antikythera Mechanism, welcoming the technical divers again, after two years of loneliness!
The Director of the Research, Dr. Angeliki Simosi, Head of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Euboea, is leading a Greek excellent interdisciplinary team, that includes underwater archaeologists, technical divers, filmmakers, and four deep divers of the Hellenic Coastguard Underwater Operations Unit.
The aim of the much-awaited archaeological mission to be carried out in the next few days is to retrieve localized antiquities, to update the map of the archaeological site and to assess the status of the famous shipwreck after two years of inactivity.
A valuable contributor to the forthcoming research is the Athanasios C. Laskaridis Charitable Foundation, that kindly offers the use of their ship, “Typhoon” for the current mission’s purposes. The Typhoon drastically upgrades the entire project, as due to her Dynamic Positioning capablity, she can hover over any specific point of the seabed , allowing the divers to use it as a floating base just over the ancient shipwreck.
It is the first time that the scientific research in the field is undertaken by a stricly Greek team. Success of this expedition will demonstrate that this type of underwater research can be undertaken with succes on a stricly national level.
The archaeological expedition to the Antikythera Shipwreck is supported for yet another year by Hublot watchmaker and the Municipality of Kythera.
